Former lawmaker Shehu Sani has condemned the violence that erupted during protests in the northern region, suggesting it may be part of a plot to overthrow the government.
Senator Sani, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, claimed that the protests, which turned violent in several northern areas, might have had a more sinister agenda. According to him, youths in the region were given money and foreign flags, including Russian ones, just days into the protests.
Sani explained, “The day before the last protest, money was distributed to the youths, and Russian flags were handed out. This indicates that the protests were not just about opposing government policies and programs.”
He continued, “There was a clear attempt to create chaos and push for a government overthrow. When such events occur, it’s evident that someone is orchestrating a plan for anarchy, lawlessness, and disorder. It’s crucial for people like us to speak out.”
In the protests across cities like Kaduna, Kano, and other northern states, some demonstrators were seen waving Russian flags and calling for military intervention. The #EndBadGovernance protests began on August 1 and were set to continue for 10 days, with participants demanding the reversal of unpopular government policies.
However, these protests turned violent in states like Kano, Niger, and Jigawa, leading to casualties.
Senator Sani emphasized that the protests were not merely a reaction to government policies but part of a broader strategy to destabilize the government. The presence of foreign flags and the distribution of money among youths suggested that external influences might be at play, aiming to create unrest and disrupt the nation’s stability.
