The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command has apprehended 12 suspected vandals in various parts of Abuja during the recent nationwide hunger protest.

According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Samuel Idoko, the arrests were made based on intelligence gathered by undercover officers.Four suspects were detained in Kuje for vandalizing an electrical installation.

Additionally, three individuals were caught attempting to vandalize infrastructure at the Moshood Abiola Stadium after scaling the facility’s fence, while their accomplices fled upon seeing the officers.

In Jabi, four suspects were arrested while attempting to damage street lights. The arrests were made by vigilant officers conducting routine patrols throughout the metropolis and its suburbs during the protest.

Furthermore, one scavenger, known locally as “baban-bola,” was detained on the newly commissioned Wuye bridge at around 3:30 a.m. in the Mabushi area of Abuja.

He was found wandering suspiciously and could not provide a satisfactory explanation for his presence at that hour.

Dr. Olusola Odumosu, the NSCDC FCT Commandant, issued a stern warning to those involved in vandalism, emphasizing that they would face severe legal consequences.

“Vandalism poses a serious threat to our socio-economic well-being and impedes societal progress. We are committed to preventing any actions detrimental to our collective development,” Odumosu stated.

He urged FCT residents to report any suspected vandalism activities to the NSCDC, emphasizing that protecting critical national assets is a shared responsibility. Odumosu also encouraged the youth in the capital city to resolve grievances through dialogue rather than resorting to the destruction of public property, which ultimately harms the community.

The Commandant, who has been actively monitoring the security situation in the FCT since the protest began, assured residents that their safety is guaranteed and encouraged them to carry on with their daily activities without fear.
