The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative, aimed at providing an alternative to petrol and diesel, will deliver long-term benefits.

This assurance came during the launch of the Rideshare Conversion Incentive Program and the MyCNG app at the Portland/NASENI Centre in Abuja on Friday.

Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized that the CNG initiative underscores the government’s commitment to offering affordable and accessible transportation, while also contributing to a cleaner environment and creating job opportunities for the youth.

Ekpo highlighted the rideshare sector’s importance in Nigeria’s urban transportation system and stated that CNG would leverage the country’s abundant natural gas reserves, positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global energy market.

“This initiative demonstrates our dedication to making transportation more affordable and accessible,” Ekpo said. “Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves place us in a strong position globally. Our goal is not only to capitalize on this resource but to ensure its benefits are tangible for every Nigerian.”

He noted that rising traditional fuel costs have posed challenges for both drivers and passengers, leading to higher fares.

The CNG Conversion Incentive Program, combined with the MyCNG App, addresses these issues by offering a 50% discount for rideshare drivers who sign up and schedule through the app, making CNG a more viable option and reducing financial burdens.

CNG, a cleaner and more eco-friendly alternative to traditional fuels, aligns with national goals to cut carbon emissions and combat climate change.

“Transitioning to CNG is a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Nigeria,” Ekpo added.

Dr. Mohammed Bulama, representing the Information Minister, noted that CNG would offer a more economical and cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel, providing relief through affordable transportation and job opportunities, particularly for the youth.

“Gas is central to Nigeria’s economy and CNG will enhance lives by making gas available to people and machinery,” Bulama said. “This initiative is a developmental milestone and aligns with our energy transition goals.”

Michael Oluwagbemi, CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), highlighted the economic benefits of CNG, noting its potential to significantly boost Nigeria’s economy and improve citizens’ lives.

He pointed out that transportation accounts for a substantial portion of household expenses and that CNG could drive down costs in urban areas, enhancing accessibility for the youth.

Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), along with other industry leaders, praised the initiative.

They agreed that it represents a win-win scenario, integrating technology into Nigeria’s economic transformation, improving energy efficiency, reducing living costs, and fostering job creation and poverty alleviation.
