The family of Ahmad Yusuf Muhammad, who is among those accused of making the Russian flag in Kano, has strongly denied the charges, claiming he has never used a sewing machine. This controversy emerged after the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested several tailors who were allegedly involved in the production of the Russian flag during the #EndBadGovernance protests in the state.
The DSS shared on their X account: “We have detained some tailors in Kano State responsible for producing Russian flags that were distributed in the region. Some of their backers have also been arrested. An investigation is ongoing.”
In response to these allegations, Ahmad’s brother, Nasiru Yusuf Muhammad, told Daily Trust that Ahmad has never operated a sewing machine and is not a tailor.
“He is my brother by birth. He was arrested under the claim that he was making the Russian flag. I want to make it clear that he has never been a tailor and does not know how to use a sewing machine,” Nasiru said.
“He has become a victim because there seems to be a misunderstanding or a mix-up. We suspect that due to stress or fear, he might have said something that led to his arrest.”
Nasiru explained that Ahmad is actually in the business of recycling used water sachets, a family-run enterprise, and works directly under him. He emphasized that Ahmad has never been a tailor and that the sewing machine mentioned in the allegations was not theirs. It was found in a neighbor’s house, and the neighbor has since disappeared.
He also stated that Ahmad did not possess the flag and had no involvement in the protest. “We had warned him about participating in such activities, and he followed our advice.”
Nasiru called on the authorities to thoroughly investigate the situation and release his brother. “We urge the relevant authorities to carefully examine the facts and free him. He is not a tailor and is wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit,” he said.
