The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has officially declared that local government elections will take place on September 28, 2024, marking the end of a decade-long hiatus.

This announcement follows two years of governance under Professor Chukwuma Soludo and increasing demands from Civil Society Organizations and various stakeholders for a return to democratic elections.

In a press release issued on Monday, ANSIEC Chairperson Genevieve C. Osakwe informed both registered political parties and the public about the forthcoming elections.

The statement included details regarding the election timetable and a schedule of activities, which will be available for collection at the ANSIEC headquarters in Awka starting August 14, 2024.

This pivotal development comes on the heels of Governor Soludo’s recent inauguration of the ANSIEC members, where he emphasized the importance of conducting a fair and transparent election.

The issue of local government elections was a central topic during the state’s Executive Council meeting on Monday.

The last time local government elections were held in Anambra State was in 2013 during the administration of former Governor Peter Obi.

Since then, caretaker committees have been overseeing the third tier of government, with no elections occurring during the eight-year tenure of Willie Obiano.
