Nigeria’s Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman will be hoping to make history in the UEFA Super Cup final when Atalanta plays against Real Madrid in Warsaw on Wednesday night.

Ademola Lookman who is the biggest threat in the Atalanta side as he will become only the second Nigerian footballer to score in the UEFA Super Cup final should he find the back of the net against Real Madrid.

Nigeria’s first footballer to achieve this feat was the then Super Eagles winger Finidi George when he helped Ajax Amsterdam to beat Real Zaragoza in 1995.

Following their UEFA Champions League glory in the 1994/95 season, Ajax were to face Real Zaragoza, winners of the 1994/95 UEFA Cup Winners Cup.

At a time when the Super Cup was contested over two legs, Ajax forced Zaragoza to a 1-1 draw in Spain before whitewashing the Spaniard 4-0 in the return leg in Amsterdam as Louis van Gaal’s men strolled to a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Finidi grabbed the Dutch side’s second goal on the night ten minutes after the interval following Winston Bogarde’s opener before the break.

Lookman who will be seeking to emulate his Europa League heroics can become only the fifth African to score in the Super Cup final if he finds the back of the net following in the footsteps of Finidi George (Ajax 1995), Mali’s Frédéric Kanouté (Sevilla in 2006), Senegalese forward Sadio Mané (Liverpool in 2019) and Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea in 2021).

Both Atalanta and Real Madrid are already in Warsaw, Poland capital as they will slug it out in the National Stadium as Kylian Mbappe waits to make his official Real Madrid debut.
