The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the abduction of 20 medical students in Otukpo, Benue State.

The students were kidnapped while traveling to Enugu for the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students. Egbetokun described the incident as “appalling, callous, and completely unacceptable.”

In a statement released on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed his outrage and commitment to ensuring the students’ swift rescue.

“As part of our unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of these young Nigerians, I have ordered the immediate deployment of significant human and technical resources to reinforce the efforts of the Benue State Command,” the statement read.

The IGP’s directive includes the mobilization of tactical units from the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS) and the Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT). Additionally, advanced helicopters, drones, and specialized tactical vehicles will be deployed to aid the search and secure the safe return of the abducted students.

The Nigeria Police Force also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families during this difficult time. “We are fully committed to ensuring the safe return of these students and will leave no stone unturned in tracking down the perpetrators,” the IGP stated.

The IGP also called on the general public to assist in the rescue efforts by providing useful information and intelligence. He urged individuals with relevant details to contact the nearest police station or reach out through dedicated helplines, including the Force Headquarters via [email protected].

“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its mission to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure peace, stability, and the rule of law throughout the country,” the statement concluded.
