President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman as the Executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), replacing Jalal Ahmad Arabi, who had served as acting chairman since October last year.

While no official reason was given for Arabi’s removal, it is worth noting that the conduct of the last Hajj under his leadership is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

A statement released on Monday by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, highlighted Professor Usman’s distinguished academic background, having earned qualifications from both the University of Madinah and Peshawar University in Pakistan, two renowned Islamic institutions.

In addition to his academic credentials, Professor Usman brings extensive experience in Hajj operations. He previously chaired the Kano State Pilgrims Board, where he successfully managed the largest quota of state pilgrims in Nigeria.

The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation. According to the statement, President Tinubu expects Professor Usman to carry out his responsibilities with integrity, transparency, and full commitment to serving the nation.
