The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening a nationwide protest and indefinite strike if any harm comes to its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged terrorism financing.

The NEC, which consists of leaders from 54 affiliate unions, declared its readiness to defend the integrity and independence of the labour movement, stating that it will not hesitate to mobilize its members across the country if the government continues its alleged smear campaign against the NLC and its leadership.

In a communique released after an emergency meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, the NEC condemned the recent invitation of Comrade Ajaero by the Nigeria Police Force, calling it a politically motivated move aimed at intimidating and harassing the labour movement.

“This investigation is baseless and clearly driven by political motives,” the NEC stated. “Rather than addressing the serious issues raised by the NLC, the government has chosen to embark on a campaign of intimidation, attempting to weaken the labour movement and silence its leadership.”

The NEC emphasized that the NLC will honor the police invitation as a responsible organization committed to the rule of law. However, it strongly asserted that doing so does not legitimize the accusations leveled against its President.

“The NEC strongly condemns the ongoing harassment of NLC leaders. This is nothing more than an attempt to destabilize a movement that has consistently stood for the rights of Nigerian workers and the broader public,” the statement read.

The NEC has directed all its affiliates and state councils to prepare for a possible indefinite nationwide strike, warning that any further action against its President or any other leader will trigger mass protests and industrial action by midnight today.

The NLC also called on civil society organizations and the general public to stand in solidarity with the labour movement during this critical time. “The fight against injustice and oppression is one that affects us all,” the NEC urged.

The Nigeria Labour Congress reiterated its unwavering commitment to defending the rights and interests of workers and the Nigerian people, vowing not to be intimidated by what it described as desperate attempts to silence the movement.

“We remain resolute in our dedication to justice, fairness, and the rule of law in Nigeria,” the NEC concluded.
