The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano has issued a deadline for aspiring caretaker chairpersons and councillors, urging them to resign from their current positions by the end of this month. The party’s directive is aimed at those intending to run in the upcoming local government elections.

During a press briefing in Kano on Tuesday, party chairman Hashimu Dungurawa emphasized the importance of this resignation for candidates to adequately prepare for the forthcoming elections. The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has slated November 30 for the local government chairmanship and councillorship elections across all 44 local governments.

Dungurawa outlined the party’s nomination fees, revealing that candidates vying for chairmanship positions are required to pay N500,000 for their nomination forms along with an additional N100,000 to express interest in the contest. For those aiming for councillorship roles, the fees are set at N150,000 for nomination forms and N50,000 for expressing interest.

He justified these “moderate fees” by acknowledging the ongoing economic challenges facing the nation. Despite this, he affirmed the KANSIEC’s fees of N10 million for chairmanship positions and N5 million for councillorship roles as reasonable.

Additionally, Dungurawa highlighted that individuals seeking local government positions should possess sound financial management skills, as the roles require effective handling of financial resources.

When discussing women’s involvement in the elections, he encouraged female members of the party to actively participate, reinforcing the party’s commitment to inclusivity in the electoral process.
