The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, has issued a stern warning that the Federal Government will not accept any attempts to undermine a democratically elected administration, regardless of the circumstances.

Fagbemi emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights of all citizens, but made it clear that any violation of these rights by individuals or organizations—outside the boundaries set by the constitution—will be met with strict consequences.

During his remarks at a farewell court session honoring the retiring Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who stepped down on August 22 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70, Fagbemi reiterated that the current government has a legitimate mandate from the populace that can only be altered as outlined in the constitution.

He asserted that any attempt to disrupt a democratically elected government outside constitutional means constitutes treason and a direct threat to democratic principles. Fagbemi highlighted that existing laws provide comprehensive measures to address such treasonous actions, declaring that those engaged in such acts will face the full force of the law.

The AGF also expressed the Federal Government’s dedication to transforming the narrative within the justice system of the country. He stated that significant reforms are underway to ensure that the justice sector receives the recognition and respect it deserves.

Fagbemi specifically pointed out that the government is focused on eliminating barriers that hinder the modernization and efficiency of the justice system. He noted that a recent 300 percent salary increase for judicial officers is part of the government’s efforts to reinforce the judiciary as the ultimate protector of the rights of ordinary citizens.

In closing, Fagbemi expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for its role in safeguarding the autonomy of Local Governments in Nigeria, urging state Attorneys General to counsel their governors to adhere to the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the financial independence of Local Government Areas.
