The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos has partnered with the Lekki Free Zone Development Company to launch the construction of the China-Nigeria Friendship School-ICT Center at Akodo Senior Secondary School in Lekki.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the ICT center took place recently, with officials highlighting the project’s potential to provide advanced information and communication technology (ICT) facilities and resources. This initiative aims to contribute to the educational development of students and teachers in the community, preparing them for the digital age.

During the ceremony, Mr. Dei Shunfa, Managing Director of the Lekki Free Zone Development Company, emphasized the importance of the project in fostering strong ties between China and Nigeria. He stated, “Today marks the beginning of a significant new endeavor that will forge strong ties and pave the way for future development and achievements.” Shunfa described the project as an investment in the community, aimed at empowering students with essential ICT skills that will shape their futures.

The Consul General of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, also spoke at the event, highlighting the project as a demonstration of the Chinese government’s social responsibility. She noted that this year marks the 53rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria, underscoring the long-standing friendship between the two nations. “Through this project, we hope to nurture more Nigerian talents with a global perspective and innovative capabilities,” she said.

Ms. Yan further explained that the ICT center will not only enhance the school’s infrastructure but also serve as a testament to the commitment of both governments to social responsibility and the well-being of their people. She pointed out that many Chinese enterprises operating in Nigeria actively contribute to local communities, driving economic development and social progress.

Lagos State officials also expressed their support for the initiative. Tolani Alli-Balogun, the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, remarked that the project would facilitate access to information for students and encourage learning. He emphasized that it would also provide teachers with timely access to information, enabling students to compete effectively in the global landscape.

Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, highlighted the importance of ICT in today’s digital age. She stated, “This ICT center will play a great role in providing training in digital skills and other technology-related services for both students and teachers.” Ambrose-Medebem added that the center would create engaging learning experiences and provide access to vast resources.

The China-Nigeria Friendship School-ICT Center represents a collaborative effort to enhance educational opportunities in Nigeria while fostering a deeper partnership between China and Nigeria. As the project progresses, it is expected to have a lasting impact on the community, equipping the next generation with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
