Lying down immediately after eating might feel relaxing, but it can lead to problems like heartburn, bloating, and indigestion. When you eat, your body uses gravity to help move food through your digestive system.

If you lie down too soon after a meal, stomach acid can flow back into your oesophagus, causing a burning sensation known as acid reflux.

In addition to acid reflux, lying down can slow down digestion. This can leave you feeling heavy and bloated. It can also disrupt your sleep if you eat close to bedtime and then go straight to bed.

To avoid these issues, staying upright for at least 2-3 hours after eating is better. You don’t have to be super active—a simple walk or sitting upright is enough to help with digestion. If you must lie down, try propping up your head with pillows to reduce acid reflux.

Eating smaller, balanced meals can also make a difference. Heavy meals are harder to digest and can make you more uncomfortable if you lie down afterwards. Finally, it’s a good idea to have your last meal at least a few hours before bed.

By staying upright and timing your meals right, you can avoid the discomfort that comes from lying down too soon after eating and keep your digestion running smoothly.
