Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced that the state’s new 6,000-capacity arena will be named in honour of global Afrobeats sensation, Rema.
The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony of the project in Benin City on Wednesday, where Rema himself was present.
The singer, who was in Benin for his highly anticipated homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, participated in the ceremony and laid the first block for the new arena.
“It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,” Governor Obaseki announced in a statement via X shortly after the event.
Governor Obaseki highlighted that the arena, once completed, will serve as a versatile venue for concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings.

He emphasized that the facility will help attract more visitors to Edo State, allowing them to experience the state’s rich culture while creating employment opportunities for the youth.
Rema, whose full name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has become a proud ambassador for Edo State. Through his music, he continues to celebrate the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire, with his latest hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, paying tribute to the city.
