Nigerian students are increasingly finding that learning Chinese can help them pursue their aspirations, often referred to as the “Nigerian dream.” This concept embodies hopes for a better life, prosperity, and a safe society—one where individuals can work, earn a decent income, and access essential services like electricity.
According to Adetoro Banwo, the deputy director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos, many Nigerian youth are eager to learn Chinese because they see it as a means to fulfill their dreams. He highlighted that the upcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing underscores the growing partnership between China and African nations, particularly in education.
Banwo explained that language learning goes hand in hand with cultural understanding. He noted that Chinese culture emphasizes values such as self-discipline, humanity, and mutual assistance, which can have a positive influence on Nigerian society. This cultural aspect is crucial in fostering a society where individuals feel connected and supported, aiding in national development.
The Nigerian dream encompasses the desire for a better environment—one that is not only safe but also prosperous. Banwo stated that the Confucius Institute, along with 13 teaching centers across Lagos, currently serves around 4,000 students who hope to leverage their Chinese language skills for future opportunities.

Banwo pointed out that infrastructure improvements, such as new highways, light rail systems, and airports, have transformed Nigeria’s landscape. As part of this commitment, China has proposed to enhance cooperation with African nations through nine major projects. These initiatives include constructing or renovating ten schools in Africa and inviting 10,000 high-skilled African professionals for training and seminars.
