Prominent cleric Daniel Sunday Onuoha has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from his detention in order to prevent a looming disaster.
In an open letter directed to President Tinubu, Onuoha, who is the founder of the Peace of Yahweh Synagogue and Eastern Judaism, referred to Kanu as “a prophet of the most high God on a mission” dedicated to the liberation of the Biafran and Yoruba peoples.
Onuoha reminded the President that he had previously urged him to release Kanu soon after his inauguration last year, a request that went unheeded. He cautioned that Kanu’s ongoing detention could lead to dire consequences for the nation, attributing this warning to divine revelations.
The cleric asserted that God has indicated that Kanu’s imprisonment would result in severe misfortunes, with repercussions that could affect the economic, political, and social spheres of the country, even leading to the demise of those responsible for his detention. He implored President Tinubu to act swiftly to avert these predicted calamities.
Onuoha drew historical comparisons to the release of Obafemi Awolowo by General Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu prior to the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in 1967, urging the President to heed “the message of Yahweh” and liberate Kanu.
“Let us not repeat the mistakes of the past, as I warned former CAN president Oritsejafor in 2011 and former President Goodluck Jonathan during his tenure at Aso Rock. Both ignored my counsel, and the consequences of that disobedience are reflected in the current plight of our nation, particularly for the people of the east,” he stated.
Kanu has been in custody since 2021, facing allegations of terrorism.
