The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has strongly criticized the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) for questioning the state’s recent tractor procurement initiative.
In August, the state government invested in new tractors aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector. However, the APC has raised concerns about this purchase, prompting a response from the PDP.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by James Bamgbose, the Deputy Director of Media and Publicity, the PDP accused the APC of lacking a fundamental understanding of governmental operations. The party characterized the APC’s comments as a reflection of its rejection by the electorate in Osun.
The PDP reaffirmed that Governor Ademola Adeleke remains dedicated to executing his five-point campaign agenda, with progress evident across various sectors in the state.
“During the APC’s 12 years in power, they failed to add any tractors to the state’s inventory, despite selling off all the ones acquired by the previous PDP administration,” the statement noted.
The party emphasized that democracy thrives on constructive criticism from opposition parties, which should hold the ruling government accountable. It expressed concern that the APC, having failed in governance, lacks the credibility to offer advice on success.
“It’s alarming that the APC does not recognize that their 12-year tenure will forever serve as a benchmark for poor governance and its repercussions for the people of Osun,” the statement added.
Regarding budgetary allocations, the PDP clarified that the government is open to supplementary budgets to address any financial shortfalls related to the tractor procurement.
The controversy arose after Governor Adeleke announced a total investment of N10 billion in agriculture, to which the APC responded with skepticism, claiming the governor’s statements were misleading.
In a statement from the Osun APC, Chairman Tajudeen Lawal advised residents to exercise caution regarding the recently unveiled tractors, noting disappointment that only 32 tractors were presented instead of the 72 initially claimed by the government. The APC also questioned the N10 billion expenditure on tractors and farming supplies, contrasting it with the N3.7 billion allocated for agriculture in the 2024 budget.
“It’s disheartening to see only 31 tractors unveiled when 72 were promised. The governor has not only betrayed the public’s trust but has also diminished the respect associated with his office,” the APC concluded.
