Nigerian motorists were taken by surprise as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) increased the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from ₦617 to ₦855 per litre on Sunday.
The sudden price hike led many to rush to nearby NNPC retail outlets to refuel.
In response, other major marketers promptly adjusted their pump prices to align with the new rate.
Earlier in the day, an unverified statement circulated, announcing: “NNPC Retail Management has approved an increase in the PMS pump price from ₦617/litre to ₦897/litre, effective today, 3rd September 2024. Ensure all pumps and price boards reflect the new price of ₦897/litre.”
NNPC Spokesperson Mr. Femi Soneye, when contacted by the Nigerian Tribune, declined to comment but assured that any updates would be communicated. His response was: “Thank you for reaching out. I have no comment on the matter at this time. If there are any updates, I will make sure to inform you. I appreciate your understanding.”
As of the latest update, the Mobil Filling Station in Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, had revised its price to ₦865 per litre, up from ₦680 the previous day.
Long queues were observed at NNPC stations in Ikoyi, and Mobil, Total, and MRS stations at Toll Gate, Ojota, and Alapere in Lagos, respectively. Traffic jams were reported on major expressways near these filling stations, although Lagos roads appeared less congested overall.
