On Tuesday, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 election, announced the appointment of Yunusa Tanko as the Interim National Coordinator for his global Obidient Movement. Prior to this role, Tanko served as Obi’s spokesperson and was the media director for the now-dissolved Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation.

Tanko has a rich political history, having previously held the position of Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in 2015. He later joined the National Conscience Party, where he ran as a presidential candidate in the 2019 elections.

During an engagement on X Space, Obi shared that the decision to appoint Tanko was reached through a consensus to allocate the position to a representative from the North. Obi emphasized that Tanko’s impressive leadership experience and track record were significant factors in his selection.

Obi remarked, “Recently, I convened an X space session to kick off a series of discussions aimed at establishing our organizational structure. To facilitate this process, I assembled a team responsible for conducting consultations and engaging with our supporters.

“It is essential to have effective leadership in place to guide this development. After thorough discussions within the movement and considering feedback from our supporters, it was agreed that the National Coordinator position should be filled by someone from the North.

“Among the nominations put forth by prominent members of our movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko received the highest number of endorsements for this role.

“I want to clarify that all appointments made at this stage are interim as we continue to build our structure. We have over one million leadership roles to fill in our quest to create a Nigeria that serves everyone. I urge you to be discerning in your nominations to ensure we bring on individuals with the necessary competence, integrity, and capacity to lead effectively.”
