The ECOWAS Women and Clean Energy (WOCEWA) Scholarship Program is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering women in West Africa to pursue careers in clean energy. Funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, this program seeks to increase women’s participation in the energy sector, both as consumers and providers of clean energy solutions.

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be citizens of ECOWAS member states, enrolled in the first year of a Master’s program at a university in West Africa, and have a strong academic background in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with a focus on energy-related fields. Additionally, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 5, be 32 years old or younger by the end of 2024, and not be receiving scholarship support from another organization.

The WOCEWA scholarship offers a range of benefits, including financial support covering tuition fees and health insurance up to a maximum of $2,500 per year for a maximum of two years, a laptop to support studies, and a guaranteed internship upon graduation. The internship will be placed at a leading ECOWAS energy institution or agency and will cover travel, insurance, and living expenses, along with a monthly stipend of $800.
