Victor Umeh, the Senator representing Anambra Central, has voiced strong criticism against those urging Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to leave the party for another political platform.
Umeh contended that Obi’s significant rise in the 2023 elections was largely due to the opportunities afforded to him by the Labour Party, making it inappropriate for him to abandon the party.
In an interview with Vanguard on Thursday, Umeh emphasized that those attempting to persuade Obi to switch parties for the 2027 elections might be engaging in a futile endeavor.
This statement comes in light of rumors suggesting that Obi is being pressured to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he could potentially secure a candidacy to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with substantial support from PDP leaders.
However, Umeh expressed confidence that Obi’s focus will instead be on strengthening the Labour Party in preparation for the upcoming elections.
“Wooing Peter Obi away from the Labour Party would be misguided because it was LP that provided him with the platform and visibility that resonated with Nigerian voters in the last election,” Umeh stated.
He added, “What is needed now is for him to enhance the party and work toward advancing his interests within it. Those encouraging him to leave may be embarking on a fruitless quest.”
Umeh also praised Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti for their proactive efforts to revitalize the Labour Party by organizing the Umuahia stakeholders meeting, which led to significant decisions aimed at strengthening the party’s future.
