A group known as the Patriots of Nigerian Democracy has voiced significant concerns regarding recent statements made by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the 2023 governorship candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, along with other party officials about their aspirations for the upcoming 2027 elections.
During a press briefing in Umuahia, Abia State, following a lengthy meeting with party stakeholders, Rhodes-Vivour declared that the LP is preparing to reclaim Lagos in the next electoral cycle.
“LP has evolved into a well-organized entity, not only ready to win but poised to seize power in 2027,” he asserted, highlighting the party’s increased capabilities since the 2023 elections.
In contrast, the Patriots of Nigerian Democracy responded with a statement that criticized the Labour Party’s priorities.
The statement, co-authored by President Comrade Olaolu Esan and Secretary Engr. Abdullahi Rabiu, expressed apprehension regarding what they deemed a diversion from governance. They urged the Labour Party to concentrate on administering effective governance rather than engaging in political strategizing.
The group referred to a recent incident in which LP supporters lambasted the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, for suggesting that Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, consider rejoining the All Progressives Congress (APC). They highlighted the inconsistency of the LP’s criticism of Kalu while simultaneously plotting for a takeover in Lagos.
“We anticipated that the discussions in Umuahia would address Nigeria’s economic difficulties and the enhancement of governance, particularly in Abia State, but instead, the focus was solely on 2027 electoral strategies for Lagos,” the group remarked.
The Patriots urged political leaders to prioritize governance and the welfare of the populace, asserting that while political rivalry is beneficial, it should not detract from the urgency of addressing critical national concerns.
“Our primary focus is on fostering good governance and ensuring the well-being of Nigerians. Political aspirations must not eclipse these essential objectives,” the statement concluded.
