The APC Professionals Forum has urgently appealed to the appropriate authorities to address the dire situation faced by those affected by the recent flooding in Borno State.
Dr. Isa Yuguda, the Chairman of the forum’s Board of Trustees, expressed his sympathies for the victims in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the flooding was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, situated on the outskirts of Maiduguri.
In his response to this calamity, Yuguda highlighted the extensive damage caused by the flood, which devastated numerous communities and led to significant property loss throughout the state. He conveyed the forum’s heartfelt prayers and support for those impacted by the disaster.
Particularly alarming to Yuguda was the impact on the palace of the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness Alhaji Garbai El-Kanemi, which suffered considerable damage.
He also noted that critical facilities such as the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo were among the many public infrastructures submerged by the floodwaters.
“After reviewing images and videos from the scene, which show that nearly half of the city, home to over five million residents, has been affected, we urge federal authorities to take immediate action to assist those in severe distress and pain,” Yuguda stated.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for promptly directing the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) to take necessary steps to support the flood victims. Additionally, he praised Tinubu for dispatching Vice-President Kashim Shettima to conduct a firsthand evaluation of the affected regions.
“The entire forum stands in solidarity with the people of Borno, praying to Allah for relief from the burdens they are currently facing,” he added.
Yugada also cautioned residents in other cities across the nation, where meteorologists have forecasted potential flooding, to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to safeguard themselves against similar disasters.
