The Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party has issued a strong statement urging Julius Abure to stop identifying himself as the national chairman of the party. They claim that Abure’s term officially concluded on June 9, 2024.

During a press briefing conducted by the Labour Party’s National Transitional Committee (NTC) in Abuja, Salisu Mohammad, the Secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, highlighted that this decision was reached during a stakeholder assembly in Umuahia, which was presided over by the legitimate Caretaker Committee led by Nenadi Usman.

Mohammad underscored the NTC’s commitment to engaging all relevant stakeholders to aid in the party’s revival from what they describe as Abure’s illegal conduct and corrupt practices.

He pointed out that since assuming the role of national chairman after the sudden demise of the former chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, in 2000, Abure has been leading the party without an election.

“Indeed, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has previously instructed him to relinquish the chair designated for the Chairman of the Labour Party,” he stated.

According to Mohammad, the NTC’s interventions have paved the way for the convening of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party in Umuahia.

“The National Transitional Committee, supported by the Nigerian Labour Congress as the trustee of the Labour Party, fully endorses the NEC’s resolution during its meeting on September 4, 2024,” he added.

He declared their backing for the 29-member Caretaker Committee to organize and conduct democratic congresses for electing party leadership at various levels, including Ward, Local Government Area (LGA), State, and National.

He emphasized that the NEC, called by Governor Alex Otti of Abia, represents a crucial step towards salvaging the party from unlawful practices.

“We firmly believe that this intervention reflects the democratic aspirations of millions of Nigerians who do not wish to see the party fade away due to the machinations of political operatives aimed at its destruction,” Mohammad concluded.
