Akiba, the representative for Calabar Municipal/Odukpani in the federal assembly, has made it clear that he has no intention of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a conversation held in Calabar yesterday, Akiba, a member of the Labour Party, addressed the swirling rumours regarding his potential shift to the APC. He emphasized his dedication to the Labour Party despite his interactions with APC members in his constituency.
“Political rumours are a common occurrence, but let me be unequivocal: I am steadfastly loyal to the Labour Party,” he stated. “I have no intention of changing my political affiliation. My role is to represent the diverse populace of my area, and I engage with everyone, irrespective of their party allegiance.”
He elaborated on his collaborative approach, mentioning that he works alongside individuals from the APC, PDP, and those unaffiliated with any political party within his constituency. “While the Labour Party is the one that brought me to office, my mission is to serve all constituents.”
Akiba also voiced his support for local government autonomy, arguing against any notion that local government elections should be controlled. “It is unreasonable to suggest that local government elections should lack independence,” he declared.
“I advocate for the swift organization of local government elections to establish council leadership. Having served as the local government council chairman for Odukpani, I understand the importance of empowering local councils to manage their affairs effectively.”
He concluded by criticizing those who oppose local government elections solely to maintain control over local government funds, asserting, “It is ludicrous for anyone to resist local government elections for personal gain.”
