On Friday, the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) expressed that the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) refusal to endorse the peace accord prior to the governorship election scheduled for September 21 was expected.
Out of the 17 political groups vying in the election, 16 have agreed to the peace treaty, leaving the ruling PDP as the sole party opting out of the agreement.
Prince Kassim Afegbua, the Media Director for the Edo APC Campaign Organization, stated that the PDP’s choice to avoid the peace accord reinforces the party’s reputation for promoting violence.
He criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for advocating against violence while simultaneously rejecting a peace initiative facilitated by respected Nigerian figures, all while accusing the Nigerian Police of partiality.
“The PDP’s decision not to sign the peace accord comes as no surprise, as they have a history of violence, intimidation, and harassment,” Afegbua remarked.
“They are attempting to exploit their position as the ruling party in the state. However, we remain undeterred and ready to confront them directly.”
He further emphasized, “Governor Obaseki cannot claim to be against violence while simultaneously lodging complaints against the Nigeria Police for fulfilling their duties.”
Afegbua added that the PDP is aware of its shortcomings and is desperately grasping at straws to maintain relevance. “We are familiar with their tactics. On the 21st, we will ensure their defeat in Edo State.”
