The Federal Government has inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with organizing the 2024 Independence Day celebration. This committee will be responsible for planning and executing the approved activities to mark Nigeria’s 64th anniversary of independence from Britain, which falls on October 1, 2024.
In a statement issued by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Segun Imohiosen, the committee was officially inaugurated by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Usman, on behalf of the SGF, George Akume.
During the inauguration, Akume emphasized that this year’s Independence Day festivities would be low-key to reflect the challenging economic conditions in the country.
“The 64th Independence Anniversary celebration will be subdued, reflecting the tough times Nigeria is experiencing,” Akume said, represented by Usman. He further explained that the event will also offer the government an opportunity to showcase its achievements during its short time in office, highlighting reform initiatives aimed at delivering the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
The official celebrations will kick off with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 26, 2024. Other scheduled events include a Juma’at Service on Friday, September 27, a Church Service on Sunday, September 29, and a Presidential Broadcast followed by the Independence Day Parade on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
The committee is composed of several key figures, including the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the Minister of Interior, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of the FCT, and the Inspector-General of Police, among others.
According to the statement, the committee’s mandate includes planning, organizing, and executing all approved activities for the Independence Day celebration. It is also tasked with documenting the event’s activities for posterity and ensuring successful implementation of all related programs.
