The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) and various stakeholders, will observe its annual Car-Free Day on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
This initiative encourages residents to forgo their vehicles for the day and embrace Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) options like cycling and walking.
According to a statement from the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the event aims to promote active and inclusive transportation methods, reduce environmental pollution, and enhance public health through increased physical activity. “Embrace active and inclusive means of transport, such as cycling and walking,” the statement urged.
Celebrated globally each September 22, Car-Free Day encourages communities to close streets and support car-free travel. This year’s event in Lagos is particularly relevant due to the ongoing fuel price hike, which has already decreased the number of vehicles on the roads.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, highlighted the importance of NMT for environmental and personal health benefits. “Beyond reducing environmental pollution, it addresses the detrimental effects of insufficient physical activity on health,” Osiyemi remarked.
The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, contributing to 6% of worldwide deaths. By promoting non-motorised transport, this initiative seeks to encourage more active lifestyles among people of all ages and abilities.
In addition to fostering sustainable transport, Car-Free Day will serve as an educational platform, raising awareness about environmental health and promoting alternatives to private cars, including enhanced public transportation systems.
Activities will take place on Ahmadu Bello Way, with hundreds of participants expected to join a day filled with events such as cycling, training sessions, competitions, skating, stretching, music, and dance.
The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation will collaborate with various Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and LUDI to ensure a successful celebration that highlights the benefits of active transportation.
