The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly contested the governorship election outcomes in the Egor and Akoko Edo local government areas, which were announced in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
At a recent press conference, PDP representative Osagbovo Iyoha accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of significant irregularities during the results collation, alleging that the process was manipulated to benefit the APC.
Iyoha highlighted that the collation center’s relocation from the local council headquarters raised serious doubts about the legitimacy of the election process.
He insisted that the PDP had actually secured victory in the local government area, claiming that PDP agents were systematically excluded from the collation center while only APC representatives were permitted entry.
He also pointed out that the number of votes recorded in Akoko Edo surpassed those documented by the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), implying possible interference with the election results.
In contrast, the acting chairman of the APC, Jarret Tenabe, dismissed the PDP’s accusations, asserting that the announced results genuinely reflect the voters’ intentions. He argued that any issues raised concerning the Akoko Edo results were thoroughly addressed during the collation phase, maintaining that the votes declared matched the records kept by the BVAS.
As the results continue to be compiled at the INEC headquarters in Benin, tensions are running high with both parties firmly entrenched in their opposing views, eagerly awaiting further developments regarding the election results.
