The All Progressives Congress (APC) has successfully secured all 27 local government chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats in the recent elections held in Imo State.
This announcement was made by Charles Ejiogu, the chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), who revealed the results at the Commission’s Secretariat in Owerri, the state capital.
Ejiogu stated, “All APC candidates have been officially recognized as elected Councilors and Chairmen of the Executive Council.”
The elections spanned across 305 electoral wards and 27 local government areas within Imo State, according to Ejiogu’s remarks.
In response to this declaration, a group known as the National Youth Alliance (NYA) from Imo State criticized the local government elections, deeming them a farce and an affront to democratic values.
The group accused ISIEC of colluding with the ruling APC to undermine the electoral process, alleging that the Commission obstructed the electorate’s ability to vote.
Chinonso Uba, the State coordinator for NYA, issued a press statement claiming that electoral materials were distributed in a biased manner, with ISIEC personnel failing to appear in several council areas while results still emerged from those locations.
He further asserted that more than 250 wards lacked necessary electoral materials, which he claimed disenfranchised numerous voters.
“Voting supplies, including ballot boxes and result sheets, arrived as late as 3 PM. In many regions, ISIEC did not appear at all, leaving many voters unable to participate,” he noted.
