Gov Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has urgently requested the Federal Government to provide assistance to flood victims in Tangaza and Illela, which are the most severely affected local government areas in the state.
During his recent visit to these areas, the governor assessed the extensive damage caused by the devastating floods. He noted that this year’s flooding has impacted 22 local government areas, with Tangaza and Illela suffering the greatest losses.
“The destruction from this flood is profound, having obliterated hundreds of homes and farmlands, leaving many residents homeless,” he lamented. “Additionally, the devastation of agricultural land has led to food shortages in these communities.”
Gov. Aliyu appealed directly to the President, describing him as a leader with a compassionate ear. “I urge you to assist these two LGAs so that the residents can find relief from the dire situation they face,” he emphasized.
Highlighting the economic significance of Tangaza and Illela, which are located near the Niger Republic, the governor warned that these communities could face severe food shortages and significant socioeconomic challenges due to the flooding’s scale.
To mitigate future disasters, the governor encouraged residents to regularly clear their drainage systems and refrain from indiscriminate waste disposal. He also expressed hope that the community would view this disaster as an avoidable event ordained by God and prayed to Almighty Allah to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
