The Nigerian Federal Government has decided to keep the upcoming 64th Independence Anniversary celebration modestly
This announcement was made by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, during a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, where he detailed the planned activities for the anniversary.
Senator Akume stated that, in reflection of the nation’s current sentiments, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a subdued approach to this year’s Independence Day festivities.
He outlined that the events are intended to remind citizens of “our collective strength in unity, the progress we have made despite adversities, the richness of our diversity, the significant strides this administration has achieved in its brief time in office, and the promise of a brighter future for everyone through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Acknowledging the tough economic circumstances faced by many Nigerians, Akume expressed the administration’s understanding and empathy towards the populace. He attributed these challenges to necessary policy decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies.
Nonetheless, he affirmed that “despite these formidable challenges, ongoing efforts are being made to alleviate immediate hardships and to generate new opportunities in the short, medium, and long term via the effective implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“These policies and initiatives are designed to provide sustainable solutions to these issues, and I assure everyone that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, we will soon see an upward trajectory in our socio-economic development.”
Akume also highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing transportation challenges by launching the Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG) and introducing the first phase of thirty hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to improve public transport.
