Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has publicly criticized Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, asserting that “no one holds the exclusive right to incite violence.” This statement was made during a recent address in Port Harcourt at the Rivers State Ijaw Peoples Congress, which was organized in his honor.

Wike seized the moment to counter the prevailing notion that Fubara speaks for the entire Ijaw community amid their ongoing power struggles.

In his remarks, Wike expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the attendees of this strategic meeting. He recounted his conversation with Senator Johnson Nsakebor, who represented the Rivers Ijaw Congress in proposing the honor. Initially skeptical about the need for such recognition, Wike humorously suggested that the funds could be better utilized elsewhere. However, he acknowledged the importance of clarifying the misrepresentations regarding the Ijaw people.

“This gathering sends a clear message to those in Abuja who may not grasp our situation. If anyone claims that the Ijaw people are at odds with me, they are mistaken,” Wike stated. He illustrated his point with a metaphor: “A father might have twelve children, and while one may stray into crime, it doesn’t taint the entire family.”

Wike urged those spreading such narratives to reconsider their claims, pointing out that all Ijaw representatives in the House of Assembly are part of a unified front. He criticized Fubara’s leadership and those envious of his accomplishments, claiming they have repeatedly failed politically.

“I have played a crucial role in elevating an Ijaw individual to the governorship of Rivers State. It was a collective effort, and we endured many sleepless nights to achieve this. So, who truly champions the Ijaw cause? Those who merely speak on television but cannot even support their Ijaw brother’s success?” he questioned.

Wike emphasized that he has consistently maintained that violence is not a monopoly of any individual or group. His commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering a peaceful environment is unwavering, as he believes this approach is essential for attracting investment and ensuring the prosperity of the region.
