President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to leave Abuja today for the United Kingdom, where he will embark on a two-week vacation as part of his annual leave.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, it was confirmed that the President will utilize this time as a working vacation and a retreat focused on reflecting on his administration’s economic reforms. He is expected to return to Nigeria once his leave concludes.
During the recent celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, President Tinubu delivered a speech announcing the Federal Government’s plans to launch a 30-day conference aimed at involving the youth in his administration. He emphasized the importance of engaging young people in shaping the future of the nation.
“The modalities for the conference and the selection of delegates will be finalized promptly,” he stated. “As we strive to address today’s challenges, we are mindful of the next generation, seeking to harness their creativity for a better future.”
In his address, which marked his second Independence Day speech since taking office on May 29, 2023, he highlighted the necessity of making the youth active participants in nation-building. “We lead today with a vision for the future we wish to leave for our children, recognizing that we cannot design their future without their input as architects of that vision.”
He announced plans for a National Youth Conference, which will serve as a platform to tackle the various challenges and opportunities faced by Nigeria’s youth, who make up over 60% of the population. “This conference will foster meaningful dialogue and empower young people to take an active role in shaping policies that affect their lives, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.”
The 30-day conference aims to bring together young individuals from across the country to collaboratively develop solutions addressing issues like education, employment, innovation, security, and social justice. The selection of delegates and the overall structure of the conference will be designed in close collaboration with youth representatives.
“We, as leaders, have the responsibility to ensure that their aspirations are at the core of the conference’s discussions. The government is committed to considering and implementing the recommendations arising from this forum, as we work towards building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united Nigeria.”
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s resolve to reform Nigeria’s political economy and defense framework, emphasizing the need for resilience in the face of challenges that have led to the downfall of other nations. He praised the resilience of the Nigerian people and expressed determination to combat banditry and terrorism, allowing displaced farmers to return to their land and contribute to stabilizing rising food prices.
