Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has officially designated Thursday and Friday as public holidays in anticipation of the local government council elections scheduled for October 5.
In an announcement made during a broadcast on Wednesday, Fubara stated that these holidays aim to allow residents to adequately prepare for the upcoming elections.
Additionally, the governor imposed a ban on all vehicular movement from 12:00 AM on Friday until 5:00 PM on Saturday.
He explained that the council elections are being held in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling that mandated local government elections to take place nationwide.
“It was based on this judgment that I instructed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission to initiate preparations for the council elections,” he remarked.
Fubara called on the people of Rivers to act peacefully and in an orderly manner during the election to ensure a successful process. He also urged security forces to enforce law and order throughout the election period.
