As part of the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebrations, Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has called on Nigerian teachers to remain resilient despite the challenging conditions they face, assuring them that their dedication will eventually be recognized and rewarded during their lifetimes.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Mamman, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, acknowledged the difficult circumstances under which many Nigerian teachers work. However, he praised their commitment to educating the nation’s children and emphasized the importance of appreciating their efforts.
“We recognize the tremendous impact teachers have had on shaping the world, building character, and contributing significantly to human capital development. Their role is essential to nation-building and progress,” Mamman stated. He added that the government is actively working to enhance the professionalism of teachers for the betterment of the nation.
Mamman also highlighted the ongoing efforts by all levels of government to improve the teaching profession, noting, “Governments are doing everything possible to support teachers. We have implemented policies such as the bursary program for education students in Nigerian universities, with 3,317 beneficiaries in 2022, and even more in 2024.”
He further commended the support of international development partners in promoting the welfare of Nigerian teachers, noting that they perform well both locally and abroad. “Teachers, like other professionals, approach their work with passion, and even when faced with adversity, they continue to show resilience and dedication.”
Mamman stressed the importance of embracing modern teaching techniques, conducting research, and integrating technology into the classroom. He assured teachers that the government holds their profession in high regard, with the establishment of specialized universities and efforts to ease international engagement through agreements on teacher mobility.
“As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, we honor teachers’ contributions and offer awards of excellence. For those yet to be recognized, don’t lose hope. Your time will come, and your dedication is appreciated,” he concluded.
