Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has assured state workers that his administration is prepared to implement the N70,000 minimum wage.

The governor gave this assurance in Ibadan on Saturday, during an event celebrating the 2024 World Teachers’ Day, addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Makinde announced that negotiations regarding the consequential adjustments to the new minimum wage would commence in the coming week. He also revealed a three-month extension of the wage award payment from October to December.

“We have extended the wage award by three months, and if we are able to conclude the negotiation during this period, we will switch to the minimum wage payment,” the governor stated.

Acknowledging the vital role teachers play in nation-building, Governor Makinde reassured them of his administration’s commitment to their welfare, emphasizing that education is key to national development and teachers are central to driving progress in the sector.

He called on teachers to continue supporting his administration in its efforts to uplift the education sector.

In his remarks, the NUT state chairman, Raji Oladimeji, urged the governor to expedite the ongoing teacher recruitment process to ensure timely deployment to classrooms. Oladimeji thanked Governor Makinde for his dedication to workers’ welfare and encouraged him to maintain his focus on prioritizing the needs of teachers.
