Earlier today, officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) were attacked by personnel of the Nigerian Army, acting under the directives of Major Adebiyi and Captain Gowon, while lawfully enforcing environmental sanitation laws in Yaba.
The unprovoked assault has drawn sharp condemnation from the Lagos State government.
Tokunbo Wahab, Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, expressed deep disappointment over the incident. “We strongly condemn this unwarranted assault on our officers, who were executing their lawful duties under the environmental laws of Lagos State,” Wahab stated.
He thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General T. Lagbaja, and Director of Chaplain Services, Lieutenant Colonel T.E. Ogbonyomi, for their swift intervention. Their leadership ensured KAI officers could continue their responsibilities without disruption, reinforcing the principle that military personnel must remain subject to civil governance.
Wahab also reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to maintaining safety and sanitation, adding that similar acts will not be tolerated. The incident highlights the importance of cooperation between military and civil authorities to uphold public order and environmental laws.
