Former President Olusegun Obasanjo declared that Nigeria’s challenges can be overcome if the nation turns back to God.

Speaking during a special Commendation Service at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Church in Abuja, where former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), was honoured with the Knight of John Wesley award, Obasanjo emphasized that despite its difficulties, Nigeria is not beyond redemption.

Reflecting on the country’s situation, Obasanjo said, “God gave Nigeria everything, but due to human greed and selfishness, we have messed it up.” He underscored the importance of humility, repentance, and prayer, stating that Nigeria’s healing would come only if its people return to God. “God has not created Nigeria as a basket case. If we show remorse and humbly call on Him, He will heal our land,” he added.

President Bola Tinubu, represented at the service by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, also urged the church to continue partnering with the government in addressing the nation’s current challenges. He emphasized that the church plays a vital role in fostering social transformation and promoting peace. “The challenges we face today require a united front, and the church can be a platform for change. Your prayers are a source of strength and guidance for the nation’s leaders,” Tinubu noted.

The President further called on faith-based organizations to collaborate with the government to mobilize resources and advocate for the marginalized, highlighting that their involvement is crucial in achieving ethical governance and moral leadership.

In his sermon, the Prelate of the Methodist Church in Nigeria, Most Reverend Oliver Abah, reassured the congregation that despite the country’s current struggles, Nigeria will overcome its difficulties. He encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast and hopeful as the nation navigates its challenges.

The anniversary celebration, marked by prayers and reflections, served as a call for collective action, with the church and government urged to work together in restoring peace, stability, and prosperity in Nigeria.
