President Bola Tinubu has extended warm birthday wishes to former military leader General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) as he marks his 90th birthday.

In a statement released on Saturday, Tinubu hailed Gowon as a remarkable gentleman and a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s history.

The President highlighted that Gowon is among the longest-serving leaders in the nation, having made significant contributions throughout his extensive career both in military and civil capacities.

Tinubu noted that Gowon, a Sandhurst-trained officer who became Nigeria’s leader at the young age of 32, has an inspiring life journey that continues to motivate many Nigerians.

Reflecting on Gowon’s tenure as head of state, Tinubu emphasized his vital role in nation-building and development, dubbing him the “father of national infrastructure.”

“Following the civil war, his guiding principle of ‘No victor, no vanquished’ was instrumental in fostering national healing, peace, and reconciliation,” the President stated.

He also acknowledged Gowon’s establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1975 as one of his most significant legacies.

“Since I assumed the presidency, General Gowon has served as a trusted advisor, providing counsel whenever necessary,” Tinubu added.
