Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, expressed strong opinions on Sunday regarding Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, stating that he has no place in serious political discussions if he fails to manage his divisive and toxic supporters.

Ahmad questioned why Obi felt the need to justify his decision to extend birthday wishes to former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.

He emphasized that for Obi to have any future political aspirations, he must embrace the concept of Nigeria’s unity.

Obi had conveyed his congratulations to Gowon as a demonstration of his belief in the importance of forgiveness and moving forward, even in the face of past conflicts.

In a post on X, Ahmad remarked: “If Peter Obi cannot rein in his harsh and toxic supporters, he does not belong in substantial political discourse.”

He further questioned, “Why does Peter Obi need to clarify his decision to congratulate General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), a respected elder statesman in Nigeria?”

Ahmad insisted that both Obi and his supporters must recognize that as potential leaders of the nation, they must prioritize unity and respect for Nigeria’s history and its notable figures.

He concluded with a stern reminder: “Without a commitment to the unity of this country, neither Peter Obi nor his supporters have a role in meaningful political discussions.”
