The Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) threatened to go on a nationwide strike during an ongoing press briefing at the university of Abuja due to the failure of the federal government to appoint governing councils for federal universities.

The union also complained about the nonchalant attitude of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government concerning academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities. During the press briefing also, the chairman of the union body, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke criticized and was against the 35 percent salary increment for professors and the 25 percent salary increment for other academics in the higher education system.
