Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Kano State, has urged for amendments to Nigeria’s Constitution to clearly outline the responsibilities of deputy governors.

Ganduje made this request during his keynote speech at the Third National Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria (FFDGN) held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The two-day conference, themed “Strategic Solutions for Good Governance, Food Security, and Sustainable Growth in Nigeria,” aims to tackle pressing national issues.

In his remarks, Ganduje characterized the role of deputy governors as often ambiguous, highlighting the necessity for collaboration between governors and their deputies in governance.

He stated, “No leader can manage everything single-handedly. Delegation is essential. Yet, there has been considerable discussion about whether deputy governors should have clearly defined roles within the Constitution. Unlike vice presidents, deputy governors currently lack specific responsibilities outlined for them.”

Ganduje proposed that constitutional revisions could include provisions that delineate the duties of deputy governors, facilitating a more effective distribution of roles.

He encouraged forum members to promote unity and collaboration as they strive to address governance challenges.
