The Ogun State Government, through its Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, has suspended a teacher following allegations that he inflicted physical punishment on Master Monday Arijo, an SS2 student of Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-emi, which reportedly led to the student’s untimely death.
The incident occurred on Friday, prompting immediate actions from the state. The teacher was swiftly arrested, while the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, faced disciplinary scrutiny.
In a statement from the ministry, Onaolapo was issued a formal query, given 24 hours to explain her decision to permit corporal punishment despite existing state regulations prohibiting such disciplinary measures.
Additionally, a letter of condolence was sent to Arijo’s grieving family, expressing the state’s heartfelt sympathy. Signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the letter described the deceased student as “an exceptional pupil who will be dearly missed by his peers, the school, and the wider Ogun State community.”
It assured the family that “justice will be pursued to its fullest extent,” with the state committed to holding all parties accountable.
The letter also conveyed prayers for the family to find strength amid their profound loss and for the peaceful repose of the late student’s soul.
