The Guardian Newspaper has refuted accusations from the presidency that it is promoting a regime change agenda, labelling the claims as “baseless and unfounded.”
Responding to a statement by Special Adviser to President Bayo Onanuga, The Guardian clarified that its report, titled “Misery, harsh policies driving Nigerians to desperate choices,” was a balanced assessment of Nigeria’s governance challenges, not a call for governmental overthrow.
In a statement, The Guardian asserted that the article objectively reflected public sentiments on current national issues, adhering to principles of factual, ethical journalism.
The newspaper emphasized its long-standing commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and opposition to any form of military dictatorship, adding that its publication was intended to encourage government accountability, in line with Section 22 of Nigeria’s Constitution.
The Guardian reaffirmed its dedication to good governance and press freedom, urging the presidency to respect the role of the media as a democratic watchdog.
