Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in Oyo State have called on President Bola Tinubu to remove them from the scheme, saying, “We are almost dead and sick.”
In a statement shared with the media and signed by ACP Victoria Ladigbolu (retd), Chairperson of the Police Retirees under CPS, Oyo State Chapter; CSP Benjamin Ishado Akande (retd), Vice Chairman; and DSP Omidina Oyewole (retd), Secretary, the retirees urged the President to exclude police personnel from the rank of Commissioner down to Constable from the scheme.
The statement reads: “As the President and Commander in Chief of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, you are also the Commander in Chief of the Police Force, the first force in the country before the military. History acknowledges this.
“Given your position, you have the power to exempt retired police officers from the CPS, just as your predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, exempted Police Generals through an executive order.
“Currently, these officers receive supportive monthly pensions, while we—the rank-and-file retirees—are left struggling on retirement. How can this lead to better service delivery?
“Commissioners of Police receive monthly pensions ranging from N70,000 to N80,000, depending on their year of retirement. Deputy Commissioners to Assistant Commissioners receive between N50,000 and N60,000, which is hardly enough to live on,” the retirees stated, asking how they can survive on such low sums.
The retirees appealed to President Tinubu to urgently remove their ranks from the contributory pension scheme.
