New Manchester United coach Rubén Amorim has ended Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City UEFA Champions League unbeaten run.
Manchester City were on a 26-match unbeaten run when they travelled to Lisbon to play Sporting CP for their fourth game of the new UEFA Champions League season.
Coincidentally, it was Amorim’s last European game for the club he has given so much to which made the encounter even more interesting.
Before the game, the last time Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side lost a UEFA Champions League game was a 3-1 loss to European giants Real Madrid back in May 2022.
City went straight into the game with a five-minute lead after the hosts were robbed in their half, giving Phil Foden the chance to strike first.
In-form forward Viktor Gyökeres struck in the 38th minute to salvage a halftime draw for his side.
After Araujo had given Sporting the lead earlier in the second half, Gyökeres scored two superb goals to make it a hat-trick against the Premier League Champions.
Amorim has taken Sporting to second place in the UEFA Champions League standings pending the outcome of the Aston Villa game, which if the Portuguese side wins, will unseat them.
