Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, has expressed that Donald Trump’s recent triumph in the U.S. election will strengthen democracy on a global scale.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, Obi also offered his congratulations to Vice President Kamala Harris, commending her commitment and perseverance throughout the electoral process.

According to reports, Trump, representing the Republican Party, made a remarkable comeback to secure his second term as President, defeating Democratic Vice President Harris in a closely contested race.

Obi remarked that the smooth execution of the U.S. elections, alongside the prompt and transparent release of results, should serve as a guiding example for Nigeria, urging the nation to move away from outdated practices such as electoral fraud, vote-buying, and election-related violence.

In his post, he stated, “Yesterday, I congratulated President Donald Trump on his successful return as the 47th President of the United States. I am hopeful that his victory will bolster democracy internationally and contribute to fostering essential global peace.

“I also extend my congratulations to Vice President Kamala Harris for her resilience and commitment throughout this political journey. She competed with remarkable courage, and ultimately, the people’s voice was heard.

“The peaceful nature of these U.S. elections, coupled with the effective transmission and release of results, should inspire us in Nigeria to discard outdated practices such as electoral malpractice, vote-buying, election violence, and network disruptions that hinder our democratic processes.

“No democratic election is truly valid unless the will of the people is accurately reflected in the ballots.

“As a nation, let us unite in our efforts to restore the integrity of our electoral system and ensure that our leadership selection process is free, fair, and genuinely represents the desires of the populace.

“Congratulations to the United States of America.”
