The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has playfully offered its assistance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in navigating the current leadership issues that threatens to break the opposition party further, suggesting that the PDP is in dire need of help.
In a swift response, the PDP fired back, accusing the APC of being a significant factor in the ongoing strife affecting its leadership.
This exchange unfolds against a backdrop of rising concerns regarding the political aspirations of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, which could exacerbate the party’s internal crisis and hinder the reconciliation efforts being spearheaded by the Olagunsoye Oyinlola committee.
For more than a year, the PDP has been embroiled in factional disputes, with divisions forming between supporters of Atiku and those aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Recently, Governor Mohammed, who leads the PDP Governors’ Forum, indicated his intention to run for president in 2027.
Atiku and Wike have emerged as pivotal figures in the party’s struggles following its defeat in the 2023 elections. The situation escalated when Mohammed joined the chorus calling for the resignation of PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
Interestingly, Mohammed has stated he would consider stepping back from the presidential race if former President Goodluck Jonathan were to rejoin the party and run for office. He made this announcement two months ago at an event in Abuja organized by the Save Africa Initiative.
According to Mohammed, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has left many citizens discontented, and Jonathan’s extensive experience could potentially revitalize the economy and provide effective leadership.
However, Jonathan’s camp has remained silent on the matter, leading to speculation about his interest in the proposal.
Meanwhile, Wike’s supporters have increasingly rallied behind Makinde as a viable candidate for the 2027 presidential election. However, Makinde has publicly declared that he has yet to make a decision about his candidacy, asserting his ability to speak for himself and promising to address his political future when necessary.
In response to the unfolding situation, APC National Publicity Director Bala Ibrahim expressed concern over the PDP’s internal discord, reiterating the ruling party’s willingness to lend a helping hand if formally approached.
“We are watching the PDP’s crisis unfold with a sense of amusement. We anticipate a time when they will seek our guidance to resolve their issues. This should serve as a reminder to Nigerians about the type of leadership they wish to leave for the nation,” he remarked.
“Anyone unable to manage their family matters should not be entrusted with the challenges facing the country. The PDP has clearly demonstrated its ineptitude in crisis management. Their short-sightedness and lack of internal democracy have led Nigeria into its current predicament.”
Bala continued, “Now, they are revealing their true nature. It’s unfortunate. However, if they regain their senses and seek guidance on party politics, the APC has established the Progressive Institute, where individuals can enroll to learn how to navigate politics within a democratic framework.”
“We are ready to offer them the assistance they need, but only if they formally admit that they are overwhelmed and require solutions.”
