Newly sworn-in Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has issued an immediate and indefinite suspension of all revenue collections across the state, particularly in motor parks and similar venues.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hon. Fred Itua, it was noted that Okpebholo has directed the state commissioner of police to ensure compliance by arresting anyone found violating this order.
Governor Okpebholo explained that he intends to thoroughly review the issues surrounding revenue collections before making further decisions.
“The collection of revenues in the State has been suspended indefinitely,” Okpebholo stated. “Anyone seen collecting revenues on behalf of the State Government will be arrested. The Commissioner of Police is hereby ordered to arrest anyone who flouts this directive and collects any kind of revenues on behalf of the State Government.”
He continued, “The Governor will soon address the issues and concerns raised. He will issue new directives soon. Until then, no one is authorised to collect revenues on behalf of the State Government.”
Okpebholo’s inauguration as Edo State Governor took place on Tuesday, officially concluding Godwin Obaseki’s eight-year administration. The swearing-in ceremony, held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, followed the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory two months prior, securing Okpebholo’s transition to the Dennis Osadebe House.
At approximately 12:55 p.m., Okpebholo took the oath of office alongside his deputy, Dennis Idahosa. The pair then circled the stadium in an open van, acknowledging supporters’ cheers and waving to the gathered crowd.
